Roof Leaking Right Now? Emergency Steps to Take

An active roof leak needs two things: fast damage control inside, and a roofer on the way. Here's exactly what to do, in order.

Right now — protect the inside

  1. Move furniture, electronics and valuables clear of the drip.
  2. Put down buckets and towels; lay plastic over anything you can't move.
  3. If the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, pierce a small hole at the low point with a screwdriver to drain it into a bucket — a controlled release beats the whole ceiling collapsing.
  4. Switch off power to any area where water is near lights or wiring.

Do NOT get on the roof

A wet roof is the most common way people get seriously hurt in a storm. Manage the leak from inside and leave the roof to a roofer with proper harnessing and safety gear.

Get a roofer moving

Call for an emergency make-safe — a roofer can tarp and temporarily seal the leak fast, then quote the permanent repair once it's safe. Photograph the damage inside and out first; you'll want it for insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can an emergency roofer come out?

For an active leak a local roofer can often attend the same day to make the roof safe, then return to do the permanent repair.

Will a tarp fix my leak?

A tarp or temporary seal is a make-safe, not a repair — it stops water getting in until the roof can be properly fixed.

Should I claim on insurance?

If it's storm or sudden-event damage, likely yes — take photos and get a written report. General wear and tear usually isn't covered.
