Roof Repointing & Rebedding: What It Is and When You Need It
If your roof has ridge caps (the tiles along the peaks and hips), repointing and rebedding are the maintenance that keeps them watertight.

Bedding is the mortar that holds the ridge caps in place. Pointing is the flexible compound over the top that seals and finishes them. Over time bedding cracks and pointing perishes, letting water in at the ridges and hips.
When you need it
- Visible cracking or gaps along the ridge line
- Loose or moving ridge caps
- Leaks near the peak of the roof
- As part of a roof restoration on older tile roofs
Why not just patch it
Patching a small section rarely lasts if the rest of the pointing is at the same age. On older roofs, rebedding and repointing the full ridge line is usually the durable fix and is often done as part of a restoration.
Frequently asked questions
How long does pointing last?
Modern flexible pointing can last many years; older cement pointing cracks sooner and is a common leak source.
Is repointing the same as a restoration?
It's one part of it — a full restoration also cleans, replaces broken tiles and recoats the roof.
Can repointing fix a ridge leak?
If the leak is from failed bedding/pointing at the ridge, yes — that's exactly what it addresses.
